Water in rivers, lakes and the sea is in contact with the atmosphere and contains dissolved oxygen. Fish and other aquatic life use this oxygen to breathe. When the water becomes contaminated with organic matter such as sewage, it provides food for bacteria that multiply and proliferate rapidly. In doing so they use up all the dissolved oxygen in the water, and fish and other aquatic living things die out. The contaminated water pollutes the environment and spreads disease. The extent of pollution in water is usually determined by measuring its Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) .
In order to control and limit the pollution of the environment it is mandatory that water is discharged into the environment only after proper treatment of sewage and waste water to reduce the amount of BOD and other contaminants to the limits prescribed by law.
